D-Shaped Connectors - Centronics
Centronics connectors are a type of electrical connector consisting of two or more pins. These pins are arranged in a "D" shaped pattern, so the connectors are colloquially referred to as "D-shaped connectors". They are most commonly used to connect computers and peripherals, such as printers, scanners, and cameras. The first Centronics connector was developed in the late 1960s by the Centronics Corporation, a manufacturer of printer equipment. It was designed to allow multiple printers to be connected to a single host computer. Over the years, the Centronics connector has become widely adopted, and is now the most common type of printer connector used with personal computers. It is also used as a connection to a variety of consumer electronics, such as cameras and scanners. The Centronics connector is a standardized interface, but implementation of the interface may vary by manufacturer. For example, the pin configuration of the connectors may differ, or the physical size and shape might vary. In most cases, however, the connectors are compatible, and devices with different connector types can usually be connected with an adapter. The simplest Centronics connector is made up of two pins. One pin is the data line, which carries information from the device to the host computer. The other pin is the ground line, which is used to supply power to the device. The most common Centronics connectors contain 36 pins, with 18 pins on either side. Of these 36 pins, 11 are power pins, 8 are data pins, and 17 are ground pins. The ground pins provide excellent electrical contact and help reduce noise and interference.Centronics connectors are also used to provide power. The power pins are often linked together to provide a single voltage source to the device, typically +5V, +12V, or +15V. Some devices, such as scanners, may require more than one voltage source and have a connector with separate power lines for each voltage. These days, the original Centronics connector has largely been replaced by USB connectors, which provide a simpler, more reliable connection between a computer and a peripheral device. USB connectors are more widely used due to their higher data transfer rate and better compatibility with modern computers and operating systems. However, the Centronics connector is still widely used in older computer systems, and these systems often require a Centronics-compatible printer. Additionally, many consumer-level devices, such as cameras, still use this type of connector. As a result, the Centronics connector is likely to remain in use for some time to come. The specific data is subject to PDF, and the above content is for reference
