36CAV4 Application Field and Working Principle

The 36CAV4 ultra high voltage current-limiting fuses (abbreviated as UHVCLF) are dual-element, time-delay, current-limiting fuses developed by the United States Eaton Corporation. It primarily focuses on ultra-high voltage application fields under 145 kV. The nominal voltage of the fuse is 66 kV, the maximum voltage is up to 145 kV, and the current limiting range is 14 kA to 85 kA.

The 36CAV4 is made up of two fuse elements: a body sack and an upper tube. The body sack contains a copper shell, which consists of a shell, two insulators, sealing materials, and an arcing contact. The upper tube contains a contact and a short-circuit connection and holds the melting alloy and the flux. The 36CAV4 fuse is filled with distilled oil.

Working Principle

The working principle of the 36CAV4 fuse is an over-current protection. When a fault occurs, it will cause a high overload current to flow through the fuse, as the current passes through the fuse elements, the melting alloy in the upper tube will melt due to the heat generated resulting in the fusing. The melting alloy may completely burn before a fault current is stopped or the short-circuit connection may open due to the pressure increase. This prevents the fault from propagating and stops it from causing further damage.

The 36CAV4 fuse has a dual-element design, which allows it to respond quickly to a fault and also prevents the fuse from being overloaded. It is designed with a current limiting feature that limits the fault current to a level below the short-circuit capacity of the power system, preventing damage to equipment. The time-delay feature ensures that the fuse will not blow when an inrush current, such as a motor starting, passes through the fuse.
