Rotary Potentiometers and Rheostats

A rotary potentiometer, or rotary pot, is a variable resistor that consists of a disc or cylinder with a resistance element connected across it. It has a spindle, or shaft, mounted on a base and usually a electro-mechanical control knob to rotate the shaft. Movement of the shaft changes the resistance between the two end terminals of the device. This resistance change can be used as an input signal for some kind of control.

The most common applications for rotary potentiometers are in adjustable volume control switches for stereo and other audio equipment, and also motor speed controllers. Other uses include lighting dimmers, and some types of rheostats, which are basically variable resistors used to control current in a circuit, such as dimmers for lights and other resistive loads.
