3. High Voltage Fuses

High voltage fuses are designed to be used in circuit breakers and other high voltage systems and electrical apparatus. These fuses are used to protect the electrical circuits from overvoltage and overcurrent damage caused by abnormal current flows and overloads. The fuse element is a solid metal strip that is permanently connected to the base and twisted inside a conductor. The melting point of this element is generally higher than other fuse elements, allowing it to withstand high current levels without burning out.

All fuse types have a current-limiting functionality, where the resistance of the fuse material increases as the current passes through it. This effectively limits the current, thus preventing damage to surrounding circuits and components. The fuse consists of a number of additional parts such as terminals, an element, a spring, etc. The operating principle of all fuses is essentially the same, with the current-limiting mechanism triggered when the current surpasses the surge rating. The heat generated from the high current passes through the fuse element, causing it to expand until it breaks, thus interrupting the arc and tripping the overcurrent protection.
