Optoisolators are electronic components used mainly for providing electrical isolation between two circuits. This allows the two circuits to be galvanically separate without leaving any electrical trace on each other. 3N243 Application Field and Working Principle

The 3N243 is most commonly used for protecting sensitive logic circuitries from the malfunction that is caused by excessive input voltage. By placing an optocoupler in series with the input line, the transformer action of the device isolates the working voltage of the circuit from the input voltage. The isolated, low voltage circuit will be protected from voltage transients and supply noise. The 3N243 optocoupler consists of a phototransistor optically coupled with a photovoltaic diode. When the photovoltaic-diode receives light, it converts the light energy into an electrical current which is then converted into an output voltage by the phototransistor. This generated current amplifies and the signal is used as an output voltage. The transistor output can then be used to either switch an external load, or to provide timing and logic functions.
