Working Principle

3SMC20A TR13 employs the conventional working principle of TVS- Diode. It consists of a semiconductor junction diode inside a housing with a certain length of the diode junction. The junction acts as a clamp to short circuit any overvoltage across the attached terminals. The clamped voltage depends on the trade-off between the dynamic resistance of the diode and the capacitive effect of the diode junction.

The dynamic resistance of the diode junction changes with the applied voltage. The capacitive effect of the junction acts to reduce the voltage across the junction. The junction is kept in a reverse state to achieve the overvoltage protection of the circuit. The zener breakdown voltage of the diode depends heavily on its construction and it plays an important role in overvoltage protection.
