IAT Application Field and Working Principle

IAT (Induction Air Temperature) is a technology used to measure the temperature of air passing through an induction system, such as an intake manifold. The device uses an external thermocouple, a specialized thermocouple consisting of two wires that are connected to a temperature measurement device. This device measures the temperature of the air passing through the induction system. The device produces an electrical signal that can be sent to a data logging device or a remote terminal. This data can then be used to aid in tuning the engine performance.

IAT technology is used extensively in vehicle and marine engine applications, especially in larger, high performance applications. The most common type of IAT used in engines is known as single-wire IAT. When the TPS (throttle position sensor) is activated, the intake manifold is closed and the IAT sensor is exposed to the intake air. The IAT sensor then measures the air temperature and sends an analogue signal to a temperature control circuit.

There is also a type of IAT known as a dual-wire IAT. This is similar to the single-wire IAT, however, the thermocouple is connected to two wires. One of the wires is connected to the intake system and the other is connected to the exhaust system. The dual-wire IAT then measures the temperature of the air passing through both systems. This type of IAT is more commonly used on turbo-charged and nitrous-oxide injection applications.

IAT technology is an essential component of engine performance. By accurately measuring the intake air temperature, engine tuners and racers can make the necessary adjustments to maximize the efficiency and performance of their engines.
