Fuseholders are essential components of an electrical system. A fuseholder is a device that connects and holds a fuse, thereby enabling it to interrupt an electrical circuit. As such, it typically consists of two parts. A housing and the contacts which connect to the fuse. The housing is typically made from either a thermoplastic or thermoset material such as polycarbonate, polyester, or nylon. The contacts, commonly made from brass, copper, or silver-plated metals, enable the holder to make a secure connection with the fuse, once installed.
Since a fuse is meant to provide overload protection in a circuit, its key component, the fuseholder, must have characteristics such as reliable ampacity ratings and proper adjustment and contact force to ensure it functions properly. Most fuseholders also feature additional features such as a durable construction, robust insulation, and an IP66 rating that ensures the fuseholder is sealed from dust and moisture. This is especially important in industrial control systems and equipment.
The most important factor when choosing a fuseholder is the type of fuse it will be used with. Different courses require different fuseholder designs, and careful consideration of the type of fuse and circuit must be taken into account in order to ensure the fuseholder is compatible. Some of the more common types are holder types such as Class R, Class H, and Class J (a.k.a. re-settable). Every type has its own mechanical advantages and disadvantages.
For Class R Fuseholders, the UL rating is 40626. These holders are available with a variety of ratings, such as 20A, 30A, and 40A. Class R holders are designed to accept standard, bolt-down style fuses, and are equipped with a robust cotter pin and insulated wire or cable. Class R fuseholders are commonly used in digital capacitors, surge protectors, and other applications where the additional protection is needed. The principle of operation is simple: when the current rises in the circuit, the fuseholder detects it and cuts the power off, preventing any further damage or hazard in the circuit.
Class H Fuseholders are rated at 300V. These fuseholders are designed to mount with ¼” quick connect terminals and are typically used for UL listed equipment that requires a higher voltage rating than the Class R Fuseholder. Class H fuseholders can accept Class H fuses of up to 30A in current rating. The principle of operation for Class H fuseholders is similar to that of Class R, in that when the current rises in the circuit, the fuseholder detects it and cuts the power off, preventing any further damage.
Class J Fuseholders are constructed of thermoplastic materials and feature a low dropout design that allows for additional protection against short circuits. These fuseholders are rated up to 600V and typically include built-in illumination to indicate when the fuse has blown. Class J fuseholders feature a unique re-set button that allows the user to reset the fuse without having to remove it from the holder. This is an advantageous feature for applications such as motor and motor-circuit control applications where the fuse needs to be reset quickly.
The choice of fuseholder is dependent on the application they will be used for and the types of fuses they will accommodate. Class R, Class H, and Class J fuseholders are all designed to provide superior protection and are ideal for a variety of applications. By ensuring the correct fuseholder is used in the correct application and with the appropriate fuse, an efficient and safe electrical system can be achieved.
