416F4801XAAR Application Field and Working Principle
Crystals have long been used in electronic circuit designs, with both natural and laboratory-created crystals being employed for numerous applications. One type of such crystal is the 416F4801XAAR, which is a miniature oven-controlled crystal oscillator manufactured in the form of a hermetically sealed package.

Field of Application
The 416F4801XAAR is mainly used for generating an ultra-stable signal frequency precisely and consistently. It is designed for use in GSM mobile phones, satellite receivers, digital video recorders (DVRs), and other portable electronic devices. Aside from having a frequency tolerance of ±10 ppm, it also features excellent temperature performance exceeding ±0.5 ppm/°C over its -40°C to +85°C operating temperature range.

Working Principle
Like other crystals, the 416F4801XAAR works by taking advantage of the piezoelectric effect of its crystal material. Piezoelectricity is the electric charge generated when a mechanical stress is applied to certain materials – an effect discovered by Pierre and Jacques Curie in 1880. When a certain type of crystal is subjected to an oscillating mechanical stress, it can produce an electric current. This phenomenon is employed to a great degree when manufacturing crystals for use in oscillators.

The oscillation frequency of the 416F4801XAAR crystal is determined both by its own parameters and those of the oscillator circuit. The main factor is the crystal\'s capacitance, costitutive element of the resonance LC oscillatory circuit. On top of that, the temperature is also taken into account; all of these parameters taken together then determines the oscillation frequency of the 416F4801XAAR.

To ensure the 416F4801XAAR offers an accurate, stable output frequency, it is provided with an oven or temperature-controlled chamber. This additional feature helps to compensate changes in temperature, and keep the output frequency within the specified tolerance range.

The feature-rich 416F4801XAAR can operate from 1.8 to 3.3V DC and draw no more than 100 uA of current when in its normal functioning mode. Coupled with its excellent frequency stability, these features make the 416F4801XAAR an excellent choice for many battery-powered, portable electronic devices – such as GSM mobile phones and satellite receivers.
