4172 Application Field and Working Principle
Terminal strips and turret boards are two possibilities for making electrical connections between circuit substrates and cable harnesses. The application field of these two technologies are versatile and depend on the design and needs of the application. Non-professional electricians often perceive the two technologies as interchangeable due to their similarities in outer shape, yet they are functionally different, a difference that is fundamental to their working principle. Understanding the specific application of both technologies is essential for making the correct choice when designing a circuit.
Terminal Strips
Terminal strips are electrically conducting stiff boards which contain rows of ‘terminals’ meaning holes cut into the boards. To secure a connection, wires are inserted through the holes which are then usually held down by screw connections. This simple technology should not be underestimated, since it provides a reliable and robust connection.
Terminal strips are particularly popular for applications in a range of electrical enclosure designs, including sheet metal enclosures and various types of plastic enclosures. If the number of terminals is limited (not exceeding 80 terminals) and the overall rating is low (up to 20A, 100V) then terminal strips provide a viable solution for controlling and controlling various circuitry.
Turret Boards
Turret boards, also called plugboards, are a solution suitable for controlling high power circuits. Turret boards can be differentiated from terminal strips by their curved shape and punched holes. The holes are parallel and the inner surface is cleverly designed as a ‘spring’ configuration, which gives the turret board an excellent contact force on each terminal circle.
The turret board is an especially effective technology when the power capacity is high (20A or higher, 120V or higher) and the number of terminals is quite large. Turret boards are the favourite choice in the aerospace and automotive industries due to their increased reliability.
Advantages of Turret Boards
The advantages of turret boards are that the spring contact force provides a strong grip on the connected cables, especially when under vibration or in harsher environments. The boards are also much more space efficient than terminal strips as they require only two rows of at least six pins for electrical contact. This makes them a favorite comparison in applications where space is limited.
Working Principle of Turret Boards
The basic working principle of turret boards relies on the spring contact force on each terminal circle. This spring configuration allows for secure connections even in vibration prone environments, which make them superior to terminal strips since it can secure an electrical connection even in cases where physical pressure or vibration is present. The design also provides for multiple connectors, thus making them ideal for complex, high-power circuits.
The connection is made by pushing the cables into the through-holes of the board. This creates an electrical connection point between the circuit substrates and the cable harnesses connected to it. The spring force on each pin ensures that the contact is maintained even if the cables are wobbling, while the curved design provides improved mechanical strength.
Advantages of Terminal Strips and Turret Boards
Terminal strips and turret boards are both versatile and reliable technologies which provide a reliable connection even in challenging environments. For applications that require a low power usage and smaller number of terminals, terminal strips are a favored option since they provide a secure connection and are relatively easy to install. For applications that require higher power usage and larger number of terminals, the set up may be more complicated yet turret boards are a favorable option since their unique spring contact force ensures a secure connection even in harsh environments.
