The 425 application field and working principle of lamps – incandescents, neons, can be quite a difficult subject to understand. Firstly, it’s important to note that these applications all stem from the general understanding of electromagnetism. All three, incandescents, neons and LEDs, can be used to transform electrical energy into visible light, and this all starts with the laws of electromagnetism.Incandescents use a process known as thermal radiation. The current runs through a wire filament, which then generates thermal energy in the form of heat. This, in turn, causes the filament to glow, producing light. This process is the most common form of lighting available, and is common in things such as light bulbs, lanterns and flashlights. This method of light production is not very efficient, and utilizes a lot of energy to produce visible light. Neon lighting, however, is much more efficient. This type of lighting uses gas-discharge lamps, which works in a different way to incandescent to produce light. The gas (usually neon gas) is contained in a narrow tube, and the current is passed through the tube. This causes the gas inside to break down, which causes the particles to discharge, producing light. This process does not produce as much heat as incandescent lighting, and so can be potentially much more efficient. Finally, LED lighting is a much more efficient way of lighting than either of the two previously mentioned. LEDs are light-emitting diodes, which are semiconductors used to produce light. They work by causing a flow of electrons along a semiconductor material (usually silicon), and the current passed through the material causes the electrons to emit energy in the form of light. Due to the very low energy consumption of LEDs, they are seen as the most efficient light source available. Overall, there are three main types of lamps which can be used for lighting: incandescents, neons and LEDs. Each of these types of lamps have a specific process of how they generate light, and each is better suited for different applications. All can work with a similar range of applications, but their efficiency will vary depending on the application.
