Snap Action, Limit Switches

The 44505-1130 is an alternating action snap action switches, commonly referred to as a limit switch. This type of switch is used to regulate the limit of a particular piece of equipment or to detect the movement of an object, such as an electric motor. Its purpose is to act as a signal to control the start and stop of the equipment.

Design & Construction

A limit switch is designed similar to that of a mechanical switch. It is composed of a switch body, electrodes, and a electrical contact connected to an actuator. The actuator is typically a lever, plunger, or a rolling element, and when extended it signals the switch to close, while retraction of the actuator causes the switch to open. The 44505-1130 is a double pole double throw (DPDT) switch, which when in its OFF setting, the pole and throw are connected asper the diagram in Figure 1a. When the actuator is extended and the switch is triggered, the pole and throw change, connecting the switch in the ON setting and creating the connection as per Figure 1b.

Operation

The limit switch is triggered when the actuator is pushed outward to the predetermined limit of a particular piece of equipment. The switch can also be triggered when an object, such as an electric motor, passes by it. The trigger releases the switch and causes it to close, which then can be used to control the start and stop of the equipment it is attached to.
