DC DC converters are designed to convert a power source from one DC voltage level to another. For instance, they can convert a 24V DC power source to a 12V power source. They are used in different applications, such as automotive, aerospace, mil-spec, and medical.

48IMR15-15-2 Application Field and Working Principle

The 48IMR15-15-2 is a 15 watt, wide-input DC-DC converter. It is designed for use in a variety of “Industrial/Test & Measurement” applications. It can accept a wide input voltage range of 4.5VDC to 48VDC, and delivers adjustable output voltage of 12VDC or 15V DC with a maximum short circuit output current of 1.3A.

The converter includes a synchronous buck topology, providing a high efficiency up to 96%. Its switching frequency is programmed at 750KHz. The converter is tailored to operate over extended temperature ranges of -40 to +75°C. It features low input and output ripple as well as excellent load/line regulation characteristics. The 48IMR15-15-2 also features short circuit, over current, over voltage and thermal protection.

The internal design architecture of the 48IMR15-15-2 is based on advanced control techniques such as wavelength, frequency setup and soft-start. Input power is applied to the input capacitors, which is then fed to the power MOSFETs. The power stage operates in a buck topology which reduces the higher input voltage to the lower fixed or adjustable output voltage. In a buck topology, the switch is operating in its transition region, resulting in high-frequency conduction and low switching losses.

Once the power stage has reduced the voltage to the desired level, a low-current linear regulator is used to reduce the ripple output voltage. A PMOS transistor is used as a transistor- capacitor (TC) filter to enable the system to maintain high ambient noise resistance. Additionally, the small low-dropout (LDO) voltage regulator provides the regulation of the output voltage and the power-on reset circuit ensures the proper reset timing to maintain tight output regulation.

The 48IMR15-15-2 comes with a hard-wired or programmable temperature control (PTC) to protect the system from overheating. When the temperature rises above 90°C, the converter will automatically shutdown, protecting the system components from thermal damage. The PTC temperature threshold is factory pre-set to 90°C. However, the user can modify it by adjusting the voltage threshold for the NTC sense resistor.
