An optoisolator (also called an optocoupler or photocoupler) is an optoelectronic device used to transfer electrical signals between two isolated circuits by using light. This device is very useful in applications such as working with high voltages or currents, as well as for preventing ground loops. The device consists of an input stage (emitter) and an output stage (detector). The emitter is usually an LED or Infrared source, and the detector is typically a photo transistor.

One of the most common optoisolators is the 4N27 series, which is a transistor, photovoltaic output optoisolator. This optoisolator consists of an input LED which produces light when a current is applied, and an output NPN phototransistor for amplifying the light from the LED. When the photocurrent generated by the LED reaches a threshold, the transistor amplifies the current and turns on the output. This optoisolator is commonly used in electronic circuits to provide an electrical isolation between two circuits, for example preventing the passing of electric noise or voltage spikes from one part of the circuit to another, or to control high voltage or current circuits from a low voltage or current circuit.
