Optoisolators, also known as optocouplers, are isolated components used to transmit electrical signals between different circuits or components. Optoisolators can provide a high degree of isolation, including electrical, optical and thermal, between the transmitter and the receiver. Among the different types of optocouplers, one of the most popular is the Transistor, Photovoltaic Output or 4N37S-TA.

The 4N37S-TA optoisolator is a four-pin device in a dual inline package (DIP). The pin functions are as follows: Anode (+), Cathode (-), Emitter (E) and Collector (C). As its name indicates, the working principle is based on photovoltaic principle.

When the Cathode (-) is illuminated by an LED, it changes the transmission characteristics of the optoisolator, allowing the voltage between the Anode (+) and the Cathode (-) to change. Now current will flow between the Anode (+) and the Emitter (E), thus triggering the opto-transistor base-emitter junction. The optoisolator collector current will now result in the output voltage, Vce, appearing between the Collector (C) and Emitter (E).

The lower the light level, the higher the current gain and therefore, the higher the torque output. The 4N37S-TA is capable of providing a high level of isolation and noise immunity, which makes them ideal for use in hostile environments or where electrical interference is present. They are also capable of providing a fast response time, with typical rise times less than 5µs.

The 4N37S-TA optoisolator is suitable for a variety of applications. Common uses include isolation of digital logic circuits, isolating small AC loads from large AC power lines, isolating power stages from high frequency analog signals, motor drive and control systems, pressure sensors, controlling power sources, and even medical and fire safety applications.
