Optoisolators are devices that transfer electrical signals between two isolated circuits via lightwaves. Among them, the 4N38 family of devices are transistor-photovoltaic (TPV) output type optoisolators built with a GaAs infrared emitting diode and a NPN silicon photo-transistor or photodarlington (PDT) detector. These devices are ideal for use in digital circuits and industrial control applications for signal isolation and are known for their reliability and high quality performance.  The 4N38-V is a 5-pin surface mounted optoisolator. It has a 3.1mm lead spacing which makes it ideal for card termination packages. It is suitable for use with applications where size of the component is critical. The 4N38-V has a maximum reverse voltage of 5V, maximum collector-emitter voltage of 30V and a maximum current rating of 200mA. It is also rated for temperature between -55⁰C to +125⁰C. The 4N38-V optoisolator is best used in industrial control, relay drivers, logic isolator, digital logic IC and instrumentation applications. It is designed to transfer electrical signals between circuits which are isolated at the input and output stage. The input circuit sends a signal which is converted to an optical signal using the diode. This optical signal is sent as lightwaves through the isolation barrier and is then detected by the phototransistor or photodarlington. The detected lightwave signal generates an electrical output. The optoisolator acts as an isolation barrier between two isolated circuits, providing safety protection. In the event of a voltage surge, the optoisolator protects the output circuit from being damaged. It also eliminates ground loop problems and provides electrical noise isolation, thereby increasing system reliability.  The working principle of the 4N38-V optoisolator is based on the electrical signal from the input being converted to an optical signal. This optical signal is detected by the phototransistor or photodarlington, which charges the base/collector junction, thus switching the transistor. The collector voltage is then transferred as electrical output from the optoisolator. The 4N38-V optoisolator is a reliable, high quality optoisolator which is designed for digital circuits and industrial control applications. Its unique 3.1mm lead spacing and temperature ratings make it the ideal choice for such applications. It can be used for signal isolation, ground loop problems and electrical noise isolation, thus adding to the reliability of the system.
