Tantalum – Polymer capacitors are dual-anode, solid-state capacitors that combine the properties of both a tantalum and a stranded polymer capacitance in order to achieve extremely high levels of capacitance density and performance. Tantalum–polymer capacitors offer higher volumetric efficiency and superior performance in terms of both capacitance density and voltage capability compared to traditional tantalum electrolytic capacitors. They are particularly useful in applications that are faced with high current, high ripple current, or high isolation issues. This type of capacitor is ideal for high-power circuits, and can be employed in a range of applications, such as batteries, power supplies, A/C converters and embedded systems.The 4THE220MI is a type of tantalum–polymer capacitor designed for various applications in an automotive environment, such as fuel injection and ABS systems. It offers superior performance, superior temperature range and superior EMI/RFI protection when compared to other tantalum–polymer capacitors. The 4THE220MI capacitor is available in two packages, a through-hole package, and a surface-mount package, with a variety of capacitance, voltage and ripple ratings. The 4THE220MI is capable of operating at temperatures up to 125°C and can withstand up to 6.25A peak thermal shock for 1 second or 20A peak or 6.25A continuous for 10ms. It has a rated voltage of 63V, and a maximum ripple current rating of 1A.The 4THE220MI tantalum-polymer capacitor functions on the basis of storing an electrical charge (in the form of a capacitor) between two separate pieces of material. One of the components is a layer of tantalum oxide, and the other is a layer of an insulating polymer.
