RFI and EMI - Shielding and Absorbing Materials

As the rapid advancement of circuit and system technology brings us ever closer to a fully integrated and cohesive society, the need to protect against the effects of radio frequency interference (RFI) and electromagnetic interference (EMI) becomes increasingly paramount. Shielding and absorbing materials play an essential role in both diverting and absorbing radio frequency and electromagnetic energy, protecting delicate components and other radio equipment in the area from becoming damaged due to excessive electromagnetic radiation or static. Part of the 5-1120-3/4-2R type of shielding and absorbing materials, are a series of conductive plastic tape products specifically designed for use in curing Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) and Electromagnetic Interference (EMI). These tapes are made up of special copper-coated polyester film lamination. The copper layer provides a rich electrical conductivity and shielding activity, while the polyester film part offers excellent dielectric quality and adhesive capability. The 5-1120-3/4-2R shielding tape acts as both an EMI and RFI reflector and absorber. It diverts radio wave energy away from the protected area that it is applied to. The copper layer specifically acts as reflector of harmful EMI and RFI radiation, bouncing the waves away and provide shielding protection to the area. The plastic film part of the tape, on the other hand, absorbs the wave energy, thereby helping to reduce the effect of the radiation in the protected area. The plastic film part of the 5-1120-3/4-2R shielding tape is coated with a specially formulated bonding agent, which provides excellent adhesion to the back of the tape. This allows the tape to stick firmly to smooth surfaces without the need for additional support. Additionally, this bonding agent also permits the tape to handle temperatures range from -20 to 100°C, without any loss of adhesion or performance. The 5-1120-3/4-2R type of shielding and absorbing materials is suitable for shielding and absorbing applications in wireless communication, computers, navigational systems, automobiles, and other electronic components. In addition the tape material is designed for die cutting applications which allows for customizing both the shape and the size to better meet the particular needs of the application. The tape can also be incorporated with other die-cut pieces and parts to construct custom RFI and EMI shields for specific systems. The main uses for this type of shielding materials are to divert and absorb radio waves that could damage or interfere with delicate components or equipment. The shielding material is usually applied to the area suspected of causing the interference, or the area known to be affected by the interference. Some areas where shielding material is often used to reduce interference are around telephone and cable TV lines, around transmitting and receiving antennas, in household electrical/electronic equipment, and even around aircraft and cars to reduce noise interference in engine, wiring and electrical equipment. To maximize the effectiveness of the 5-1120-3/4-2R shielding material, it is wise to follow some of the guidelines for application. Firstly, when cleaning the surface the shielding material is going to be applied to, grease, dirt and other residue should be removed to the fullest degree. Also, for best results, overlap all edges as much as possible. Where possible, the copper coating should have direct contact with all metal surfaces to allow for maximum effective shielding abilities. In conclusion, the 5-1120-3/4-2R shielding and absorbing material is preferred for its robustness, durability, and the fact that it provides excellent EMI and RFI protection. It is easy to use, and can be applied to a variety of surfaces with good adhesion. The material is very capable of withstanding extreme temperatures, and can be used in a variety of application fields to protect various components and equipment from the potential damage or interference caused by radio and electromagnetic waves.
