RFIs (Radio Frequency Interference) and EMI (Electromagnetic Interference) are both forms of electromagnetic radiation that can interfere with communication and electronic devices. This is why RFI and EMI shielding and absorbing materials are extremely important. Shielding materials are designed to block the propagation of RFIs and EMI by reflecting and dissipating the radiation, while absorbing materials absorb the radiation and reduce its strength.
In modern times, numerous technologies have become increasingly dependent on cellular communication, satellite transmissions, and electronics. With this proliferation of communication technologies and electronics, the need for proper RFI and EMI shielding and absorbing materials has increased. For protection from electromagnetic radiation, shielding materials must be chosen carefully, as different types of materials have different abilities to absorb and shield radiation. Examples of shielding materials include metal plating,;dielectric coatings; foams and rubbers; wireless and cellular technology package materials; ceramics and glass fabrics; mesh materials; mica and magnetic materials. Shielding materials work by physical reflection, which prohibits the radiation from penetrating further and can also reduce its strength.
In addition to shielding materials, absorbing materials can also reduce the strength of RFI and EMI frequency radiation. Common examples of absorbing materials include absorbers such as EMI absorptive sheets, waveguide shunts, absorber gels, multifunctional absorbers, ferrite absorbers, and metallic absorbers. Each type of absorber has its own particular benefits and limitations. Absorbers can function in two ways: by “absorbing” the energy from the electromagnetic radiation or by “dispersing” it. Absorption occurs when the electromagnetic radiation’s energy is drawn out of the field, and dissipating occurs when the radiation’s energy is reflected and scattered in different directions.
RFI and EMI shielding and absorbing materials are essential for protecting communication technologies and electrical systems from the harmful effects of electromagnetic radiation. The materials used to protect these technologies must be carefully chosen, as the type of material used will determine its ability to absorb and reflect electromagnetic energy. The use of both shielding and absorbing materials can greatly improve communication and electrical systems’ protection from electromagnetic radiation.
