Reed Relays

Reed relays are a type of electrical switch that utilizes a magnetically-triggered reed switch. This type of switch is composed of two ferromagnetic blades housed within an airtight enclosure. When the proper current level is applied to an electromagnet wrapped around one of the blades, the two blades are forced together, and an electrical circuit is closed. When the magnetically-induced force is removed, the blades separate again, breaking the circuit.

Reed relays have a number of advantages over other types of switches. These include low power consumption when compared to other types of electromechanical relays, minimal size, fast switching speeds, and long lifespans. The most common switching speed of a reed relay is 1 millisecond, and it is not uncommon for a reed relay to last for up to 1 billion operations.

5000-0388 Application Field and Working Principle

The 5000-0388 is a type of reed relay that has been specifically designed for use in industrial automation systems. The 5000-0388 is a single-pole, single-throw (SPST) relay, and so is typically used for switching devices on and off. It features a typically low power draw of only 5mA, and is operative with an input voltage of 5 to 24 Volts.

The 5000-0388 utilises a hermetically sealed contact system and features an internal encapsulation for additional levels of protection. The reed switch contact for this model is made of either copper alloy, stainless steel, or silver alloy, and the coil itself is wound from copper wire. The relay also features a LED light to indicate when the relays contact is closed.

The operation of the 5000-0388 is quite simple. When the coil is energised, a magnetically induced force draws the two blades of the reed switch together, closing the circuit and allowing a current to flow. When the coil is de-energised, the blades separate again, breaking the circuit and stopping the current.
