Electromagnetic interference (EMI) and radio frequency interference (RFI) filters act as a barrier between an electrical device and its environment, diverting the nuisance signals away from the device. As their name suggest, they predominantly tackle EMI/RFI related noise. EMI/RFI filters are also known more traditionally as LC, RC networks, indicating its components.

An EMI/RFI filter comprises of inductors (L) and capacitors (C). With certain applications, the filter may also include resistors (R) or from a combination of RLC components. Performing as an impedance entity between the line and the ground field, each of the individual components has different roles in their overall behaviour. Firstly, capacitors pass AC signals as they are alternating voltage, bypassing the AC component of the EMI around the circuit. Comments are then stored within the capacitor’s dielectrics. Inductors help lower the peak AC frequency making them usable for reactive components. The inductors also help absorb disturbances, reducing the voltage.

On the other hand, resistors are used as an attenuator, although their role depends on the type of filter. Resistors can aid power dissipation and current-limiting, but it largely depends on its usage and location. The LC, RC (LRC) filters are also used in combination with other filters of the same type, or with higher order filters to reach different objectives. With such an extensive range of types and applications, LC, RC networks are highly tunable and ideal for dealing with wide ranging frequencies.

One such type of EMI/RFI filter is the 51-351-604, a two-cavity filter designed for coaxial networks. The filter is used for EMI transients in RFI series applications and relies on a LC type filter. Using only inductors and capacitors, it provides a low-pass filter with excellent suppression. The order of the filter follows the low-to-high pass sequence, this has the component amplitudes filtering downwards at each frequency. Its high attenuation and flat stop-band rejection are the key features that make this type of filter versatile in its applications, as it is able to suppress several frequencies simultaneously. Typically, the 51-351-604 is aimed to suppress unwanted EMI between 20MHz and 700MHz. In addition, it has the capability to couple both common and differential modes, allowing it to cater for EMI that is travelling on both single-ended transmission lines and differential transmission lines.

The 51-351-604 has several advantages over other types of filters due to its design. As a cavity filter, the suppression is passive, meaning it does not require a power source. This also eliminates the use of components such as amplifiers or oscillators. Having the LC type filter further reduces the size of the filter compared to higher order filters, providing significant electrical and physical size benefits. Its simplicity provides an attractive solution for assembly as well. This combination of performance enabled in a simple design makes the 51-351-604 particularly well suited to many different applications, from communications circuits to electronic instrumentation.

Overall, the 51-351-604 is a powerful EMI/RFI filter for RFI series applications. Its respectable attenuation combined with its compact size makes it especially popular in installations with limited space. With its effective design and versatility, it is an excellent solution for EMI/RFI problem between 20MHz and 700MHz. This type of filter is a great example of how simple combination of inductors and capacitors can be used to provide effective noise suppression in electrical systems.
