electromagnetic interference (EMI) and radio frequency interference (RFI) are two of the most significant sources of signal disruption for electronic equipment. Both have their origins in noise picked up by the electronics from external sources such as power lines, radiowaves and other electronics. EMI and RFI filters work to reduce or prevent these external noises from affecting the signals within the equipment.
