Backplane Connectors - Hard Metric, Standard - is a type of interconnection used in high-speed digital telecommunications that allows data transfer between multiple cards. The 5100141-4 series is a single-ended copper-based connectivity solution for high-bandwidth digital backplanes. It follows the so-called Hard Metric standard for backplane connectors that are designed to interface with devices operating at 60 GHz and higher.

The connector itself has five independent rows of contacts, with forty single-ended contacts per row. The standard design uses a specialized contact strip with five separate strands of contacts for the front row, four strands for the rear row, and three strands for the remaining rows in-between. This gives the design an effective total of forty contacts per row. The contacts are also arranged in two keying levels, which creates the desired degree of resistance when two connectors mate.

At the same time, the contacts are designed to be held securely in place within the connector, while the insulating support structure helps to increase the signal integrity. The contacts also feature a beveled design, allowing them to be easily inserted into a host system. As a result, any incoming signals are filtered and decoded before being sent to the system. This ensures a more reliable and secure data transfer.

With its combination of advanced signal-processing, data-routing and ESD protection features, this type of connector provides excellent performance, reliability, and scalability.
