Programmable oscillators are electronic circuits digitally controlled to provide an oscillatory output having a desired frequency. They provide a solution for the design of inductor- or capacitor-based oscillators, which require expensive and complex production process, as well as a solution for the design of digitally tuned frequency-to-digital converters, which are usually distributed in one or two integrated circuits. The programmable oscillator 510KCB-CBAG is particularly designed for use in communication control circuits and data acquisition systems, providing stability, excellent noise and jitter performance and selectable output frequencies.

The 510KCB-CBAG is a single-chip programmable oscillator designed for the purpose of providing robust clock signals in those data processing systems where tight clock timing and jitter tolerance is necessary. It is a monolithic device that can be used in systems operating at various frequencies, such as in medical systems, industrial control systems and telecommunication systems. Furthermore, the 510KCB-CBAG has a wide range of optional features, including selectable frequencies, selection of the crystal frequency, jitter tolerance and noise immunity.

The 510KCB-CBAG consists of an integrated circuit with a built-in high-frequency crystal and two identical channels, each of which can be programmed to provide outputs at different frequencies. The crystal frequency is selectable by means of an external resistor network. The first channel can also be programmed to control the jitter tolerance, noise immunity and power consumption. The second channel is dedicated to the output of the oscillator, where the signal can be set to various user-defined frequency settings. The programmable oscillator includes the following components: an amplifier, a phase-locked loop, a semiconductor crystal oscillator, an on-chip comparator and an output amplifier.

The amplifier of the 510KCB-CBAG amplifies the signal from the crystal to the full-range of the signal. This signal is then fed to the phase-locked loop which increases the signal frequency to its target frequency. It uses the process of phase-locked loops to maintain the output signal frequency. The semiconductor crystal oscillator is then used to provide the reference signal for the phase-locked loop to enforce its setting. This is done by comparing the two signals and adjusting the loop to maintain their relative phases. The on-chip comparator is used to adjust the relative phases of the input signal and the reference signal and provide a digital feedback.

The final output of the programmable oscillator is generated by the output amplifier, which amplifies the signal, and then produces the final clock signal. This signal is then used as the basis of the data processing system. It also provides a control signal to other components in the system as needed. The 510KCB-CBAG oscillator is a versatile programmable device that allows to design systems requiring different frequencies, while maintaining tight timing and jitter performance.
