Programmable oscillators provide the capability to generate and synthesize a variety of output signals within a single oscillator package through the use of additional control circuitry and/or processor-controlled software programs. Programmable oscillators are particularly useful in applications where flexibility of signal source is required. In particular, one of the leading programmable oscillator technologies is the 511LAB-CAAG, which is a dual frequency oscillator with a wide range of applications.

The 511LAB-CAAG Programmable Oscillator contains two independent oscillators, called A and B. The oscillators are driven by a single clock signal and are programmed using a lock-in detection technique. The A Osc will output a frequency that is an integer multiple of the fundamental clock frequency. The B Osc will output a frequency that is an integer multiple of the A Osc frequency. This means that with a single clock signal and a lock-in detection technique, two output signals can be generated with different frequencies. The A Osc also provides a square wave output, while the B Osc provides a triangle wave output.
