51940-416LF Application Field And Working Principle

The 51940-416LF from Tyco Electronics is a 2.54mm (.100) Pitch, Wire-to-Wire Receptacle Turret Lead-Free Connector System. It is a zero insertion force (ZIF) connector designed for applications including computer storage, base stations, telecommunications, and test and measurement instrumentation. The 51940-416LF is RoHS compliant and has UL 94V-0 rated materials.

The connector is assembled with two parts, one being the receptacle and the other being the pin. The receptacle consists of two parts, a housing containing 16 slots for contacts (or pins), and a latch mechanism for securing the two halves of the connector together. The pins contact is a standard 2.54mm spade, which inserts into a dovetail gully pattern in the housing. The latch mechanism is similar to a zif connector, where a release tab on the side of the housing is pushed down to disengage the latch, and the part is then pulled away from the mating part before the contacts can be inserted.

The contacts for this connector are made from tin-plated copper alloy and the pin and receptacle are both manufactured from thermoplastic. This material is stronger than PVC and also has a lower insertion force, which is advantageous for certain applications. The contact design has a robust staggered turret, which increases the number of contact points and increases the amount of daisy-chain cabling that can be achieved.
