.The history of lamp development has been a continuous process of improvement, from the simplest campfire to the modern, energy efficient lighting systems of today’s homes. Lamp types can be divided into two broad categories for convenience, namely, Incandescents and Neons. In this article, we shall be looking into the application field and working principles of these two lamps.
Incandescents are the most common type of lamp found in most households and commercial buildings, due to their comparatively lower costs and ease of use. They are produced when an electric current is passed through a thin filament, typically made of tungsten, and the heat generated by the filament causes it to glow white-hot – hence the name \'incandescent\'. The intensity of the light produced depends on the amount of current passed through the filament, with higher intensities producing greater illumination.
Incandescents are well suited for interior lighting, as their soft, warm light is unobtrusive yet sufficient for general tasks. They are also well-suited for display lighting, as their low visibility makes them practically invisible when off. Incandescents come in a variety of sizes, shapes and wattages to suit a wide range of applications.
Neon lamps are an electric lighting method that utilises neon gas, which is inert and non-toxic in nature, enclosed in a glass tube. Neon lamps can be easily recognised by their characteristic red light. When an electric current passes through the enclosed gas, a reaction occurs which causes the molecules of the gas to become excited and emit long-wave radiation in the form of visible light. Since the wavelength of the light emitted is relatively longer than that of an incandescent lamp, it produces a bright, piercing light.
Neon lamps are most commonly used for signage and other decorative purposes. Their long wave length gives them the ability to produce bright, vibrant lighting in a range of colours, making them highly versatile and very aesthetically pleasing. They are also ideal for signs and billboards, as they are very visible in the dark and can even be seen in direct sunlight. Additionally, their energy efficiency and low wattage make them a great choice for a variety of applications.
In conclusion, both Incandescents and Neons have a variety of applications, from interior lighting to signage. While Incandescents are typically more suited for interior lighting due to their softer light and greater efficiency, Neons are more suitable for decorative purposes due to their vibrant colours and longer wave length. Each type of lamp has its own advantages and disadvantages, and should be selected based on the specific application and environmental requirements.
