Toggle Switches

Toggle switches are a preferred form of switch as they enable mechanical operation and provide a high level of contact assurance. Toggle switches are single-pole switches, which means that for a circuit to be complete, another configuration is needed. This can either be another pole or a complementary switch movement.

Working Principle

The basic operation of a toggle switch begins with the user pushing or flipping the switch in one direction or the other to switch it off or on. The toggle switch is designed with two possible positions for the switch - the open position and the closed position.When the switch is in the open position, the contacts within the switch are not in contact with each other and so there is no electrical current flow. When the switch is flipped to its closed position, the two contacts within the switch close, enabling an electrical current to pass through the contacts and thus completing the circuit.
