Pin Configurable/Selectable Oscillators are high-performance oscillator solutions with a wide variety of output frequency, pullability and jitter characteristics to meet the most demanding application requirements. Regarding its working principle, the 532BC oscillator family is based on the Pierce principle, a well-established oscillator topology that has been used in oscillator designs for decades. It consists of an amplifier with negative feedback, typically connected to an external series inductor or tank circuit, which forms a resonator.
When the circuit is powered up, the signal generated at the amplifier is sent to the tank circuit, where it is amplified until it is large enough to meet the exit threshold of the amplifier, causing the signal to be inverted and sent back to the amplifier. This is repeated and eventually the signal will become a stable oscillation at the resonant frequency of the tank circuit.
The frequency of the oscillation is set by the external tank circuit, which can be tuned to the desired frequency by adjusting an on-chip resistor. This can provide open-based tuning across the full frequency range of the oscillator.
The 532BC series oscillator also uses clock generation technology to further improve the phase noise and jitter performance. This is achieved through on-chip digital logic and delay lines to generate a stable clock signal with minimal jitter.
