These potentiometers are used extensively in instruments, where they are used to adjust the values of resistors in the circuit which in turn change the values of voltage or current which the instruments measure.

As the two adjustable terminals are moved along the resistive material, the total resistance between the two terminals be changed. These rheostats typically have a power rating of 25 to 100 watts, and can be used for very large power adjustments.
