Terminal Blocks, also known as Wire-to-Board Connectors, are one of the most popular and versatile connection methods available in the industrial and consumer electronics world due to their astounding versatility, reliability and low cost. The term semiconductor and terminals are often confused with each other and in fact, both have different definitions and therefore, a distinct purpose.
A terminal block is a block of electrical connections consisting of an insulated body with a portion of screw terminals, spring-loaded steel pins or printed circuit boards, which are used to terminate electrical circuits in a safe and reliable manner. Terminal blocks provide a convenient access point for the distribution of power for both low and high voltage power transmission. They are most commonly used for interconnecting multiple circuits on an instrument or wiring panel.
Terminal blocks come in many different sizes, shapes and configurations, depending on the application and the amount of power they will be handling. The three main categories of terminal blocks are: Conduit, Junction and Splice Block and Board Connectors. Conduit blocks are generally used for providing electrical connections in the conduit system to the motors, switches and other devices. Junction blocks are usually used for joining multiple devices to conducting power. The Splice block is used for jumpering or bridging circuits at the junction box or to bridge two or more lights or circuits. Board connectors are used to connect components to the printed circuit board.
In addition to these basic types of terminal blocks, there are several other types of terminal blocks that are designed for specific applications. These include terminal blocks for heavy loads, intermediate and power distribution blocks, electronic solder blocks, PCB mount blocks, terminal blocks for stranded wire, terminal blocks with grounding screws and many other specialty terminal blocks.
Terminal blocks can also be used to provide control, distribution and protection functions in electronic devices. The primary function of a terminal block is to provide a secure, insulated connection between two or more electrical components. A terminal block typically comprises of two mounting terminals that are connected to an electrical conductor. The mounting terminals are then attached to a surface or print board for a more secure and reliable connection. In addition to providing a secure connection, a terminal block can provide protection against shorts, over currents, reverse currents or any environmental debris that may damage the components.
Terminal blocks are further classified based on their working principle. The most popular types of terminals are press-fit terminals, crimp terminals, PCB mount terminals, terminal blocks and \'screwless\' blocks. Press-fit terminals are designed with a terminal block that contacts the conductor through forces generated by the pressing of metal pins into the conductor. Crimp terminals are designed to be inserted into a pre-made cavity and crimped onto the conductor. The contact surface of the conductor is then shaped and molded into a desired form to provide resilient and secure connection. PCB mount terminals are designed so that they can be mounted directly onto a printed circuit board for direct electrical connection. Terminal blocks are the most popular type of connector today because of their ability to provide reliable connections and maintain electrical integrity.
The \'screwless\' varieties of terminal blocks are also designed to provide a secure connection between two conductors without the need for screws. The conductors are inserted into a recess that is machined into the terminal block and they are then compressed together using either a hydraulic press or a punch press. These types of connectors offer quick and easy installation and they can be mounted onto a variety of surfaces, including PCBs, plastic and metal.
Terminal blocks are used in a variety of applications and offer an economical solution for common high-power connections. Typical applications include the power distribution in electric vehicles, power distribution for remote and hostile environments, marine and seismic vessel controls, instrumentation and telecommunication hubs, signal conditioning, and miniature motor control. Terminal blocks are also used in applications such as LED lighting, switching applications, and in systems and control applications.
Whether your application demands just a single connection or thousands of connections, terminal blocks provide reliable, secure connections in a variety of applications. They are an incredibly versatile solution and can be used in both commercial and industrial settings. Whether your application involves low-voltage lighting, power distribution or control applications, terminal blocks are the ideal solution for your application needs.
