Working Principle

589L144X2CAT uses a unique circuit topology which involves two sections: a phase-locked loop (PLL) and a voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO). The PLL consists of a phase detector, a loop filter and a voltage controlled crystal oscillator (VCXO). When the signal at the input of the PLL is higher than the frequency of the internal VCO, the phase detector compares the frequencies of the two signals and sends out correcting pulses. These pulses are filtered and used to correct the frequency of the internal oscillator to be in-synch with the input signal.

The VCO is a two-section oscillator consisting of a triangle-wave generator and a sine-wave generator. The triangle-wave output of the triangle-wave generator is filtered and rectified to provide a DC voltage. This DC voltage is used to modulate the frequency of the sinusoidal output of the sine-wave generator. This frequency modulation causes the signal to be locked to the input frequency and the output of the VCO to be in-synch with the input signal.
