5HF 3.15 Application Field and Working Principle

5HF 3.15 miniature high speed fuses are designed to protect electronic circuits from short circuits, overload, and open circuits. They are available in .25 Amp to 20 Amp ratings, and suitable for use in applications including AC and DC motors, solenoids, lighting, and semiconductor protection. 5HF fuses are UL listed to UL 248-14, and CSA certified to C22.2 No. 248.14.

Construction

The 5HF 3.15 miniature high speed fuse is designed with a special glass tube that contains two or more tin-plated copper elements. The elements are attached to a blade at both ends and embedded in a BTB binder that contains pure fusible sand. The fuse consists of two components: the fuse element and the fuseholder. The fuse element is a cylindrical tin-plated copper body that fits within the fuseholder.

Working Principle

The 5HF 3.15 fuse works on the principle of thermal time-delay. In the event of an overload or open circuit, the fuse element will heat up. The rate of heating is dependent on the current flowing through the circuit and the short-circuit current capability of the fuse element. The fuse element will expand and contract with the heating and cooling of current, until a point is reached when it can no longer contract, indicating that the fuse has opened. The fuse will then need to be replaced.
