TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressor) diodes or Surge Protector Diodes, have become increasingly prevalent in electronics design due to a combination of increasing miniaturization of devices, decreasing cost of components, improved knowledge and understanding of the underlying technologies, and increasing demand for higher voltage protection. The 5KP130C is one of the most popular TVS diodes available, and has been designed to provide protection to sensitive electronic components from transient voltage spikes and ESD (electrostatic discharge).

The 5KP130C is designed to protect against medium to high energy transients such as those found in industrial environments. It can be used to protect against surges from lightning strikes, AC line faults, and surges from motor start-up and shut down. The diode is rated for 130 volts peak pulse power, and is capable of handling up to 3,500 Watts of transient energy.

The diode is constructed from silicon-based material and includes an internal clamping element which is designed to activate at a maximum of the rated voltage, and clamp off the voltage buildup before it damages the device. It is a low-capacitance diode, which means that it has a relatively low amount of resistance and is able to react quickly to a transient voltage spike.

The 5KP130C diode is a common choice for protection in digital, analog, RF, and mixed signal circuits, including desktop and laptop computers, automobiles, consumer electronics, and telecommunications equipment.
