Introduction

5MF 1.5 is a fuse application specifically designed to protect circuits with a 15-amp maximum current.

Construction

The 5MF 1.5 is designed with a chrome plated brass body, the material providing for a strong, reliable housing as well as helping to dissipate heat in the circuits. The body also serves as a support for the fuse, with two terminals for wiring. A tubular center element houses the silica-based labyrinth seal which provides most of the protection of the 5MF 1.5.

A knurled nut and an adjustable set screw on top of the unit permit tightening the fuse, permitting toggling the trigger point of the protection. The fuse casing also includes a black plastic cap that covers the set screw and knurled nut when in use.

Application Field

The 5MF 1.5 is primarily used for protection of circuits that draw up to 15 Amps, typically within the electrical industry. These are generally located in places where a trip to replace a blown fuse is not a viable option. Working Principle

The fuse operates on the principle of thermal breakage. When an overload occurs, the device trips a contact, blocking the load. In the 5MF 1.5, a layer of silver in the inner construction of the fuse melts due to the increased temperature. The fuse reacts by opening contacts, prevailing over the current and preventing the outbreak of a fire or an explosion. In the 5MF 1.5, the thermal breakage function takes place due to the silica-laced labyrinth seal.

The working of the thermal breakage is based on a negative temperature coefficient and the thermal length-time characteristics. In other words, the overheating producing melting of the fuse is dependent on the temperature, remaining current, and temperature-dependent volume changes of the labyrinth seal.
