5MFP is an abbreviation of 5x20mm Fuse marking P, which is a miniature fast acting fuse. It is usually used in electronic appliances, computers, game consoles and home-use apparatus and other places for circuit protection. The 5mfp fuse’s basic element is an electrically conductive plastic tube having a very low thermal coefficient, which is filled with a special metal alloy powder. Once the current exceeds the rated value, the metal alloy powder will be heat up by the Joule effect and quickly melt, thus preventing further damage to the components of the circuit and stopping the electric current.

The 5mfp fuse operates on a simply working principle. When a certain current flows through them, a resistor convert the electric power into heat due to the Joule effect. The heat will then quickly fuse the metal alloy in the fuse, cutting off the circuit in a matter of seconds. The current carrying capacity of the fuse is determined by the metal alloy composition and the length of the tube. When current or surrounding temperatures increases, the resistance of the metal alloy will also rise. In order to protect the circuit, the fuse will cutoff the excess current and restore the normal operation of the device once the over loading condition is eliminated.
