Aluminium-polymer capacitors or 63SXE33M capacitors are types of capacitors composed of polymer, typically polyethylene-terephthalate (PET), as the dielectric layer in a solid form. The electrodes are made of aluminium foil etched on one side and mostly aluminised PET film on the other side. Electrolytes are either an aqueous solution, a solid polymer or can be suspended in a gel.

Aluminium-polymer capacitors offer a good combination of capacitance, voltage ratings and high temperature endurance and are alternatively named Alu-Polymer Capacitors, 63SXE33M Capacitors or Polymer Aluminum Capacitors. This type of capacitor has emerged in recent years as a unique and dependable component in modern electronics due to its high capacitance, low ESR and small size.

63SXE33M capacitors have a wide variety of applications due to their combination of high capacitance, high voltage rating, temperature stability and very low ESR. These characteristics make them suitable for high-frequency applications, including power factor correction, transient suppression, decoupling and filtering.

The working principle of an Alu-Polymer Capacitor is the same as for other types of capacitors. It stores an electrical charge through the combination of an electrolyte and two metal plates separated by a dielectric material, resulting in the creation of two capacitors connected in parallel. The voltage at each plate is the same, while the current is different. This is because the capacitance of the two plates is different, as a result of their area, distance between plates and dielectric constant.

The main benefit of 63SXE33M capacitors is their low equivalent series resistance (ESR), offering a possible alternative to other technology such as multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs), in some applications. This low ESR improves the efficiency of the capacitor and its ability to handle larger currents.
