Film capacitors also known as plastic film capacitors, foils, metallized dielectrics and flexible capacitor film are alternating current capacitive elements. They are characterized by a wide range of capacitance values and very low dissipation factor or dielectric losses in comparison to other capacitors. They are widely used because of their high dielectric strength and stability.
Metallized polyester film capacitors are the most widely applied type of film capacitors. The dielectric consist of polyethylene terephthalate film, covered on both sides with metal layers, primarily aluminum. The metals reduce the capacitance dissipation factor and enhance the dielectric strength. For this reason the dielectric strength of polyester film capacitors is much higher than other electrolytic or paper capacitors. The 684MWR630K is an example of a metallized polyester film capacitor.
