The 6N135-500E optocoupler is an optically isolated device with a built-in photovoltaic transistor output. It isolates low-voltage digital logic signals from high-voltage applications. The 6N135-500E optocoupler features a peak transfer current of 500mA. It is capable of operating over a wide temperature range, from -40°C to +85°C.

Working Principle

The 6N135-500E optocoupler contains an infrared LED with a built-in photovoltaic transistor. When a current passes through the LED, it emits infrared light, which is directed at the photovoltaic transistor. When the transistor is exposed to the light, it converts the light energy into electrical energy, which is stored in the form of a voltage across the base-emitter junction of the transistor. The transistor then acts as a switch, allowing current to flow between its collector and emitter. This flow of current is isolated from the photonic energy generated by the LED, forming a galvanic isolation barrier that safeguards the digital logic signals against high voltages.
