Optoisolators are electronic circuits that are designed to provide electrical isolation between two sections of a circuit. The 6N138S(TB)-V is designed specifically to use an optoisolator Transistor, Photovoltaic Output to provide electrical isolation. This optoisolator is composed of an infrared LED as the input side and an NPN silicon phototransistor as the output side.

Application Field

This optoisolator is typically used in relay drivers, industrial controllers, analog and digital control circuits, power supplies, frequency counters, process controllers and security systems. The 6N138S(TB)-V is designed so that its digital input is connected to the LED and the output is then connected to the phototransistor. It has a current transfer ratio of 200% at 25 mA and a package that is 8-pin DIP. It also has a wide operating voltage of 5V to 18V.

Working Principle

The working principle involves emitting light from an LED, also called the emitter section, impinging upon a phototransistor, which is the receiver section. When the LED emits light, the phototransistor reacts by changing its electrical resistance in response to the light. The phototransistor can regulate its own current, so the amount of current that the phototransistor passes is determined by the amount of light impinging upon it. This optoisolator contains a built in feedback resistor and base resistor to ensure that the phototransistor is accurately responding to the LED output.

The output signals from the phototransistor respond in direct proportion to the light emitted from the LED. Since the output is regulated, the output current remains constant regardless of the input voltage fluctuations. This device also has a guaranteed high input-output voltage isolation of more than 1.2 kV, to prevent electrical transients from entering into the input circuitry or output circuitry.

The 6N138S(TB)-V Transistor, Photovoltaic Output optoisolator can be used in a variety of applications, such as motor controllers, I/O interfaces, pulse-width modulators, and communications link isolators. This optoisolator is especially suitable for use in industrial, automotive, and process control applications, where long-term electrical isolation and signal transmission are required.
