The Application Field and Working Principle of 6TCE680MI

Tantalum - Polymer Capacitors are one of the best all-around performance types of capacitors currently, having application field in high temperature, hybrid and solid capacitors. 6TCE680MI is a new class of these capacitors, which employs a unique construction, built on the principles of 5th generation Thin Film - Multi-layer Ceramic Capacitors (TFCMLC): thin layers of tantalum-based dielectrics and electrodes are clustered and cooled together, resulting in a highly stable storage device.6TCE680MI offers performance features that address the evolving needs of modern electronic systems, including low ESR and high capacitance values for low ripple current applications, high operating temperature high-kappa dielectrics for increased power density, and high insulation reliances for reliability and durability. The capacitor\'s small form-factor and reliable construction make it ideal for use in high-density multi-layer circuit boards and embedded designs where space savings is key.

Sealing Construction

The 6TCE680MI capacitors employ a hermetically sealed construction. It consists of two thin layers of electrically conductive substrate which may be either metal or ceramic. A third intermediate layer of conductive material such as metals, metal oxides, ceramic or semiconductor materials is added in between the two layers. This is followed by a thin isolation layer, which allows electrical charge to move freely between the two layers. The isolation layer is then covered with a thin metalized or metal-resist coating, which prevents electrical charges from leaking into or out of the capacitor. Once the capacitor is fully assembled it is hermetically sealed in a top-fill/bottom-fill type package which is resistant to moisture, mechanical stresses and other harsh environmental conditions.

Working Principle

When the 6TCE680MI is charged, the static positive ions of the conductive layer form a static electric field with the static negative ions of the isolation layer. This electric field generates an electrical charge across the capacitor, which is known as the “storage capacity.”As the applied voltage increases, the static positive ions displaced from the conductive layer move towards the isolation layer, which then reduces the conductivity of the entire capacitor and contains the electric field. As a result, the capacitance and ESR decrease, giving the capacitor a shorter settling time and higher frequency response. Furthermore, by varying the distance between the two layers and the total capacitance, the capacitance and ESR can be tuned to match the intended application.
