Banana and Tip Connectors - Jacks, Plugs

Banana and Tip Connectors, or simply referred as Jacks and Plugs, are electrical connectors which consist of two male and a female electrical connectors. Jacks are the male component and Plugs are the female component. They are used for connecting electrical signals within a single device or in between multiple devices.The 72930-6 standard is an international standard which provides specifications for Banana and Tip Connectors. The 72930-6 is categorized into two types; Type A and Type B. Both types follow the same general principles and basically differ in the number of pins and the electrical rating capacities. Type A generally contains 6 pins while Type B generally contains 10 pins. In terms of ratings, the effective current rating of Type A is 3 A and Type B 4 A. The 72930-6 standard specifies the requirements for both pin length and distance apart. For Type A, the pin length must be between 6.2 and 7.8 mm and the distance between the centres of the pins has to be between 11 and 13.5 mm. As for Type B, the pin length must be between 8.5 and 11 mm and the distance between the centres of the pins needs to be between 16 and 20 mm.In addition to the size requirements, the 72930-6 specification also sets the polarity requirements. Type A connectors must have one pin that is larger than the other five pins and the larger pin must be on the side closest to the adjacent connector. For Type B, two of the pins must be larger than the other eight pins and the larger pins must be on the side closest to the adjacent connector.Apart from the physical requirements, the 72930-6 specification also specifies the working principle of the connectors. The working principle can essentially be split into two parts; mechanical and electronic. Mechanically, the connectors essentially form a physical connection by locking the male and female components. This connection allows electrical signals to travel between the two components. At the same time, it also helps increase the durability of the connector by preventing it from coming apart. Electronically, the electrical signals are transmitted through the pins of the plugs and jacks. As electrical current flows through the metal pins, a magnetic field is generated around them. This magnetic field then induces a voltage in the pins of the male and female connectors in the form of a sine wave. This sine wave creates an AC signal which is detected by the receiving circuit.Overall, the 72930-6 standard provides specifications for Banana and Tip Connectors in terms of physical and electrical requirements. Both Type A and B connectors follow the same general principles and the main difference lies in the number of pins and the electrical ratings. Additionally, the principle of operation for these connectors is also specified by the 72930-6 specification. As such, they form the perfect connectors for connecting electrical signals within a single device or in between multiple devices.
