Common Mode Chokes (CMCh) are electronic components used for power filtering and noise reduction in electronic circuits. They are also known as differential mode chokes, which are designed to filter out alternating currents (AC) and direct currents (DC) from the power supply, while also providing a means of reducing EMI/RFI interference. CMChs are essentially inductors, consisting of a coil of wire wound around a ferrite core. The core provides an inductance, or electrical resistance, between the two ends of the coil. When an AC signal is applied to the coil, the core provides a resistive path that dissipates the electrical energy, reducing the amplitude of the signal. This is known as inductive suppression.Common mode chokes are most commonly used in power supplies to filter out high frequency noise or spikes. In this application, the CMCh acts as a low pass filter, blocking high frequency electrical signals that can cause EMI interference. CMChs are also used in electronic circuits where the power supply needs to be isolated from the circuit itself. They can be used to reduce voltage spikes or to reduce the amount of inductance in a signal path, which can reduce the amount of noise or distortion in the signal.Another common application for CMCh is in optical fiber communications where they are used to reduce the amount of noise or interference in optical fiber transmission lines.CMChs are often used to reduce the amount of cross-talk between two fibers, which can create noise or distortions in the data signal. CMChs can also be used to reduce the amount of crosstalk in copper or coaxial cables.
