Inductors used in fixed inductors can generally be classified into two types – winding type and non-winding type. Winding type inductors involve the winding up of a metal wire around a core in order to generate the desired inductor. Non-winding type inductors involve the use of a current-carrying metal sheet or a ferrite core as the primary inductive element. The relationship between the current and the counter-EMF in an inductor follows the equation known as Faraday’s Law of induction.

The application fields of fixed inductors are many. These include those related to general electrical applications, signal and digital processing, noise cancellation, motor control systems, and radiating systems. In general electrical applications, these inductors generate or store electrical energy as required, such as those found in transformers. In signal and digital processing applications, these inductors work as part of transmission lines and modulators. The application of noise cancellation inductors seeks to reduce noise in various situations, such as the production of heat in automobiles. In motor control systems, fixed inductors can be used to generate and amplify electrical control signals. Lastly, in radiating systems, fixed inductors provide a form of electromagnetic shielding from disturbances in environmental fields.
