The 74ALVC2245WM is a low voltage, 5V tolerant, octal non-inverting transceiver in multichannel, bidirectional logic with 3-state outputs. It is designed to use 5V logic, yet translate logic levels up to 3.6V. It enables a system to move data between two nodes over two different but independent buses with minimal hardware and system overhead.

The 74ALVC2245WM is particularly well-suited for applications dependent on data communication protocols, such as data transmission, clock and control signal distribution, memory systems accessing and address multiplexing. It can also be used in other signal-switching and digital-logic applications such as wired data buses, memory buses and computer system buses.

The standard operating voltage range of the 74ALVC2245WM is from 4V to 5.5V, and its threshold voltage is 3.6V. This device also has excellent current drive of ±15mA. Its input/output pin has 25mW drive capability and up to 23mA output current. This device has an on-chip overvoltage protection circuit that limits transceiver output voltage to 3V under short-circuit conditions.

The working principle of the 74ALVC2245WM operates as a pair of independent transceivers with separate direction-control. Each transceiver consists of 8 non-inverting buffers. The transmit/receive inputs (A1 through A8 and B1 through B8), the buffer output enables (1OE and 2OE), and the active-low direction-control inputs (DIR1 and DIR2) are used to control the direction of data flow. The outputs of the transceiver (1Y, 2Y, 3Y, 4Y, 5Y, 6Y, 7Y and 8Y) are three-state outputs with active-low output enables (1OE and 2OE). When the output enables are active, the corresponding eight outputs will follow their respective inputs. When the outputs are disabled, the output lines are in the high-impedance state.

Through the two sets of direction control pins DIR1 and DIR2, the 74ALVC2245WM is able to switch between the two independent buses in both directions. When the DIRn pins are high, the A data inputs are routed onto the corresponding B outputs, and when the DIRn pins are low, the B inputs are routed onto the corresponding A outputs. When either of the DIR pins is in the high-impedance state, all outputs are placed in the high-impedance state.The 74ALVC2245WM can also be used as a basic level translator; the A inputs can be powered by 5V while the B inputs use 3.3V.
