74HC393PW is a dual 4-stage presettable counter with two independent binary up-down counters ranging from 0 to 15, included in the Logic - Counters, Dividers category.
Application fields of this item include frequency division, pulse width modulation, and other timer/counter applications while working in astable, monostable, and bistable modes. Other possible uses are digital clock circuits and time-delay relays. It has a typical propagation delay time of 14 ns, and a power dissipation of 125 mW at 5V.
What makes the 74HC393PW a great choice for countering applications is that it has an Asynchronous Preset feature allowing the user to set the 2 counters’ outputs to a known state at any time, as well as an Asynchronous Clear feature allowing the user to clear the 2 counters at any time. This offers several advantages, including shorter reset time and avoiding the need of a reset circuit.
The two 4-bit cup-down counters, each with asynchronous Clear, Reset, and Preset, are identical and independent. They are both synchronously clocked by the positive edge of the Clock input. Both Synchronous / Asynchronous Resets, Pac Set, and Down Counts, both clearly count down. The data is transferred on the Count-down output.
Both of the counters feature a power-up in either preset mode or count-down mode, with the Load inputs providing input enable control. When Reset is high, both counters are put into a reset state, and then on the falling edge of Clock, both enter a preset state. Setting preset time after the falling edge of Clock is controlled by the Pac Set inputs. After the falling edge of Clock, both counters count down if Pac Set is low and Pac Out is high.
Finally, for proper operation, the 74HC393PW requires a power-up reset circuit and a clocking signal to reset both counters. The power-up reset circuit should discharge both Reset pins to 0V and hold them at 0V for approximately 10 ms after power is applied. In addition, the clocking signal should remain at 0V when the system is in the reset state and should remain at 0V after the last 0V of the clock cycle.
