Working principle

The 74HC597D/AUJ shift register includes serial input (SI) and serial output (SO) pins. It incorporates 8 data I/O pins, a lead frame and a power pin to dissipate heat. When power is supplied to the component, the data loaded at SI port is stored in the register on a first-in-first-out (FIFO) principle. The data is then shifted out from the serial output port, one bit at a time.The component features an asynchronous serial IO. Lastly, in the SISO mode, data is shifted in and out of the component in serial as required for UART ports and for communication between two processors. The component features four control pins, SET, MR, MR/SHIFT and RESET. The RESET pin clears the register and resets it in a known state. It should be held at Low logic level during normal operation. The SET pin is used to initialize the register to a known state while the MR/SHIFT pin is used to change the modes of operation from “set” to “shift”.
