Working principle
The 74HC597D/AUJ shift register includes serial input (SI) and serial output (SO) pins. It incorporates 8 data I/O pins, a lead frame and a power pin to dissipate heat. When power is supplied to the component, the data loaded at SI port is stored in the register on a first-in-first-out (FIFO) principle. The data is then shifted out from the serial output port, one bit at a time.The component features an asynchronous serial IO. Data stored in the shift register is shifted out with a binary clock signal with a corresponding rising edge. The component also features a hold function. It allows the register to shift data until a Low logic level is applied to the hold pin. The component can be used in various modes such as parallel input parallel output (PIPO), parallel output serial input (POSI), serial output parallel input (SOPI), and serial input serial output (SISO). In PIPO mode, data is transferred between the component and a processor in parallel. Data is moved between component and processor at the maximum speed of the component. In POSI mode, data is loaded in the component in serial and unloaded in parallel. Due to the serial data loading, the component is able to shift data at high speeds when compared to PIPO mode.In the SOPI mode, the component is used to unload data from the component in serial, making it ideal for applications that require serial data. Lastly, in the SISO mode, data is shifted in and out of the component in serial as required for UART ports and for communication between two processors. The component features four control pins, SET, MR, MR/SHIFT and RESET. The RESET pin clears the register and resets it in a known state. It should be held at Low logic level during normal operation. The SET pin is used to initialize the register to a known state while the MR/SHIFT pin is used to change the modes of operation from “set” to “shift”.Conclusion
