Working Principle
The 74HCT4040DB consists of two divide-by-two blocks and a divide-by-four block. The divide-by-two blocks are controlled by two logic levels, one for Clock and the other for Reset. Each block has two outputs, one from pin 4 (Q0) and the other from pin 13 (Q1). These two outputs are connected in cascade so that the output of one is connected to the input of the other. In this way, the two divide-by-two blocks form a divide-by-four block. The divide-by-four block has two outputs, one from pin 6 (Q2) and the other from pin 11 (Q3).
The 74HCT4040DB is capable of dividing a frequency by a power of two. When the Clock signal is low, the divide-by-two blocks output the same logic level. When the Clock signal is high, the divide-by-two blocks output two different logic levels and this forms a frequency division by two. The divide-by-four block divides the frequency by four by combining the two outputs of the divide-by-two blocks. The divide-by-four block is designed such that the output of the divide-by-two blocks connected in cascade is taken as one of the inputs of the divide-by-four block.
The 74HCT4040DB is also capable of resetting the logic levels to 0 or 1. The Reset signal is used to reset the two divide-by-two blocks, so that the output of each divide-by-two block’s output is equal. The Reset signal is also used to reset the divide-by-four block to a particular output. This allows the 74HCT4040DB to be used as a logic shift register where the output of the register will be shifted to a particular state depending on the logic state of the Reset signal.
