The 74LV74D/AUJ is a multi-functional, dual-D type flip-flop that’s designed to provide a wide range of integrated logic applications. It is a versatile building block used to implement a variety of logic functions, such as frequency dividers and oscillators, counters and registers, and functions that are used to control complex timing and logic operations. This flip-flop is available in a variety of packages, including both surface-mount and through-hole.
The 74LV74D/AUJ consists of two D-type latches, both with separate set and reset pins. Each half of the latch can be used independently or together in a linked data mode. They feature active LOW reset and set inputs, and have complementary outputs. The latches are also equipped with high-speed data input/output transition control for applications such as skew-distorted data bus, bus input/output skewing and external clock skewing functions. The logic threshold level is guaranteed at 2.6V over the full operating temperature range.
This flip-flop is widely used in a number of specialty applications, such as frequency dividers and oscillators, bus input/output skews, external clock skewing, as well as in logic functions, such as counters and registers. In a frequency divider circuit, the 74LV74D/AUJ is connected to an asynchronous clock source and is used to divide a clock source. When a clock signal is applied to the clock input of the flip-flop, the Q and Q outputs toggle in line with the clock. This provides a reduced frequency output, which can then be divided further by connecting another flip-flop to the Q and Q outputs of the first. This process can continue until the desired frequency has been reached.
The 74LV74D/AUJ can also be used in counter and register applications. A counter is a multi-stage flip-flop circuit, which can be used to count pulses or other digital input signals. In counter applications, the 74LV74D/AUJ is used to count the number of pulses inputted to the circuit, and the outputs can be used to control other devices in the circuit. A register can also be implemented, allowing more complex data transfer operations such as serial shift registers, shift-and-lock registers, and decrement counters. These circuits enable multiple-bit operations, and can be divided into two main categories: asynchronous and synchronous.
The 74LV74D/AUJ can also be used to control complex timing and logic operations. The clocking of the latch can be configured to enable the transfer of data held in the flip-flop registers, at precisely determined intervals. In this application, each individual latch will store data from the preceding stage, before transferring it to the next stage in the operations chain. This data can then be used to produce predefined time delays, or trigger logic operations.
The 74LV74D/AUJ is a cost effective and reliable integrated logic device for many special purpose applications and offers some remarkable advantages including high-speed data input/output and clock transition control, active low reset and set inputs, transistor and full-body diodes to guard against electrostatic discharge, and 6V guaranteed threshold levels over the operating temperature range.
