FFC, FPC (Flat Flexible) Connectors - Contacts

Flat Flexible Connectors (FFC) and Flat Printed Connectors (FPC) are two slightly different but similar designs of electrical connectors. An FFC is a flat, flexible cable that can be used to connect two electrical components together. It is also known as a ribbon cable. These cables have multiple flat contact points that are attached at both ends, allowing the cable to be easily twisted and manipulated in order to fit into tight corners and under components.

FPCs are similar to FFCs but the contacts on an FPC are not flexible. They are printed with an adhesive coating so that the contacts can easily be attached to boards and components without the need for soldering. Both FFC and FPC cables are available in various sizes depending on the electrical current requirements and contact densities, ranging from as small as 0.2mm pitch to as large as 30mm pitch. The contact density can range from as few as two contacts to as many as hundreds of contacts.

The most common application for FFC and FPC connectors is in the consumer electronics industry. They are most often used in cell phones, digital cameras, personal audio players, and a variety of other small portable electronic devices. These connectors are also frequently used in industry and medical applications.

The principle of operation of FFC and FPC connectors is quite simple. The contacts at both ends of the cable are designed to make contact with an electrical circuit board when the connector is inserted. The contacts have a low contact resistance, meaning that when they come in contact with the electrical nodes on the board, it causes a connection that carries current from one point to another. FFC and FPC connectors are designed in such a way that they can be easily inserted and removed, while still providing a secure connection.

FFC and FPC connectors are versatile and have many varied applications. They have several advantages over alternative connection technologies such as solderless flexible cables and IDCs, which are less reliable and provided limited current capacities. As such, they can be used in almost any application where electrical connections must be made quickly and easily.
